•We conducted an SMS upon 41 papers presenting visualizations for VRSs evolution.•The area is sustainably covered and diverse in terms of visualization and tools.•The results show a lack of formal evaluations in industrial settings.•Some evolution scenarios are overlooked.•We identified several gaps and research opportunities.
