摘要

•Contribution of organic carbon (OC) to total specific surface area (SA) is unclear.•EGME SA correlated with water sorption SA, except for OC-rich soils.•OC contribution to SA depended on clay mineralogy and OC content.•OC contribution ranged from 7.5 to 13.9 m2/g per %C depending on clay mineralogy.•For samples rich in montmorillonite, OC negatively contributed to total SA.
