Experimental and ReaxFF molecular dynamic study of NO emission during municipal sludge/coal co-combustion

•NO emission mechanism during sludge/coal co-combustion were explored via ReaxFF MD.•There has negative synergistic effect on NO emission during co-combustion.•Coal reduced the emission of NO from sludge during co-combustion.•The mechanism of the effect of coal on sludge-NO emission was revealed.
