Forest stand-by-environment interaction invalidates the use of space-for-time substitution for site index modeling under climate change

•Spatial variation in site index and temperature is larger than temporal variation.•Coefficients of space-for-time substitution model differ from individual models.•Prediction bias of state-space model is smaller than for space-for-time substitution.•Climate warming lowers site index for high and rises for low productivity classes.
