•Superior sedimentation performance of fluidized bed flocculator was studied.•MGF achieved higher removal efficiency with less coagulant than MSF.•Flocs in MGF have more compact structure and settled faster than those in MSF.•Fractal dimension of flocs was introduced into the settling velocity equation.
