•Sb2Se3- based polycrystalline thin film solar cells exhibiting 5 % efficiency.•Innovative back contact material, based on low costs, low toxicity and abundant elements such as Fe, S and O.•High scalability back contact deposition technique: R.F. magnetron sputtering at RT.•Ohmic behaviour and low contact resistivity between Sb2Se3 and back contact material.
