•DIC method is utilized to determine the stress field around blunt notches.•A variety of notch geometries including U, VO, and Keyhole is included.•Different spectrums of mixed-mode loading using the BD test are investigated.•The effect of HOTs on the stress field of blunt notched components is investigated.
