•Nusselt number of 0.3 vol% of nanoparticle in water is higher by 18.01%.•The friction factor is higher by 13.05% at 0.3% vol. of nanofluid.•The thermal entropy generation is lower by 2.378% at 0.3% vol. of nanofluid.•Thermal efficiency of the collector is enhanced by 56.69% at 0.3% vol. of nanofluid.•Exergy efficiency of the collector is 2.59% at 0.3% vol. of nanofluid.
