•Selective hydrogen damage was observed in two boiler evaporator tubes.•A transient reduction in water quality initiated the corrosion and hydrogen damage.•A thick iron oxide scale was formed, which weakened the tube.•Thin evaporation residue accumulated on older tubes had a protective effect.•Scale removal with acid may worsen selective corrosion in hydrogen-damaged areas.
