Among his many technical contributions, automated performance tuning—or autotuning—has been a critical pillar of the research that has emerged from Jack Dongarra’s group at the University of Tennessee. This article reflects on the history of that work, including an analysis of the large body of research that has used or cited the ATLAS system since its inception in the late 1990s.
