•A novel active phase change heater is built to accomplish built heating demand.•An event control is adopted to switch an fan to maintain thermal comfort zone.•Building thermal performance and PCM heat transfer characteristics are revealed.•Parametric analysis indicates effects of four key parameters on system performance.•Suitable indoor temperature is guaranteed by novel active phase change heaters.
