Linking bioenergy production by agricultural residues to sustainable development goals: Prospects by 2030 in China

•An integrated system of bioenergy production utilizing agricultural residues (ARs) is constructed.•Net energy, environmental, economic and social (EEES) impacts are evaluated in three scenarios.•Bioenergy production utilizing ARs is linked to SDGs through 17 life cycle EEES indicators.•There are mitigation effects on 11 out of 13 environmental impact categories.•ARs-abundant regions benefit outstandingly from bioenergy production to enhance sustainability.
