•We present features of a persuasive app, co-designed in a Swiss-based living lab.•The app exploits a point-based rewarding system and tangible prizes to reduce car use.•Specific design choices allow to tackle undesired effects of point-based rewarding systems.•We show that the app managed to raise the interest of its car driver target group.
