•We reviewed literature on child executive function and parent and teacher behaviors.•Parent and teacher behaviors showed similar associations with child executive functions.•Theoretical frameworks were established more strongly in the parent literature.•Parental behaviors were studied with greater detail than teacher behaviors.•Research on the impact of teacher behaviors can benefit from parenting studies.
