Design Optimization of Wireless Powered Mobile Edge Computing Systems

Mobile edge computing (MEC) and wireless power transfer (WPT) are two promising technologies that complement each other in terms of enhancing computation and storage capabilities of the Internet of Things ecosystem. We propose WPT-assisted MEC system consisting of a base station (BS) integrated with a MEC server, that broadcasts radio frequency energy to the energy harvesting users (EHUs). The users offload their computational tasks to the MEC by using time division multiple access (TDMA). Due to the doubly near-far effect, we proposed system that ensures fair resource allocation, by employing proportional fairness criterion for the computation rates. For this system, we propose design optimization problem that jointly optimize the EHUs’ transmission powers and processors speeds, as well as time durations for energy harvesting and information offloading. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed system achieve sufficiently high computation rates, and at the same time ensures the feasibility of the EHUs with theoretically unlimited lifespan.
