•Ill-posed optimization is examined in a pavement backcalculation context.•An optimization algorithm is developed for inverse calculation of dynamic modulus.•The novel technique is compared with existing methods in simulated backcalculations.•Results indicate the new algorithm produces the most reliable inverse calculations.
