•The effect of SO2 on activity of Zn-poisoned catalyst depends on Zn content.•Surface sulfate was formed on catalyst with low Zn content in the presence of SO2.•ZnSO4 was formed on catalyst with high Zn content in the presence of SO2.•Surface sulfate could form new Brønsted acid sites and increase catalytic activity.
