•Methods with phase inversion were designed for intensifying reactive extraction.•With designed dispersion methods, the Murphree efficiency reached 90% within 2 s.•The effects of phase inversion on mass transfer were systematically studied.•Mathematical models were established for describing mass transfer characteristics.•The most effective dispersion methods for reactive extraction were recommended.
