•The Arbitrary Lagrange-Euler method is verified to precisely predict evaporation.•The evolution mechanism of the flow inside an evaporating droplet is revealed.•The flow in the droplet transforms into a multi-vortex flow as the θ decreases.•A suitable volume is required for the multi-vortex flow in a flat droplet.
