•Stability of immobilized uranium by nZVI was investigated.•nZVI transformed to ferrihydrite and then stable iron oxides.•More than 90% U(VI) was reduced.•Key uranium uptake mechanism changed from reduction to adsorption.•Eh could be used to control uranium uptake efficiency and its stability.
