Structural, optical, and magnetic properties of submicron hematite (α-Fe2O3) particles synthesized from industrial steel waste

•A ferric oxide from steel industry is used as precursor material.•Hematite submicron particles were prepared through wet synthesis method.•Structural and optical study was carried out by spectroscopy characterization techniques.•The magnetic characteristic in the samples were carried out using SQUID.
