•Fe0.10ZnNSC owns atomically dispersed FeNx and ZnNx active sites.•The doping of S and the synergy between Fe and Zn enhance catalytic activity.•Fe0.10ZnNSC delivers better ORR performance than benchmark Pt/C catalyst.•Large specific surface area enhances the accessibility of active sites.•Highly conductive carbon matrix ensures electron transport to active sites.
