Deployable toroidal structures based on modified Kresling pattern

•Novel design approach for deployable toroidal origami patterns is proposed.•Design is based on fold angle optimization of regular Kresling pattern.•Deformation behavior is analyzed to assist the selection of suitable pattern configuration.•Shape accuracy of the multi story physical models is obtained experimentally.
