Chemometric analysis and risk assessment indices to evaluate water and sediment contamination of a tropical mangrove forest

•Nutrients and trace metals in water and sediment were assessed.•Concentrations of chloride (20,116 mg L − 1), sulfate (2315 mg L − 1), and salinity (52.7 PSU) were very high in water.•Granulometric composition is governing carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and metal biogeochemistry in sediments.•Sediments were moderately contaminated with metals (Zn, Cu, and Ni).
