Medicinal plants used in the treatment of asthma in different regions of Brazil: A comprehensive review of ethnomedicinal evidence, preclinical pharmacology and clinical trials

•63 families and 188 species are traditionally used for the treatment of asthma in Brazil.•Fabaceae, Lamiaceae and Asteraceae species are the most indicated for the treatment of asthma in Brazil.•The Brazilian states of Piauí and Ceará had the higher number of ethnomedicinal uses.•31 species traditionally used in Brazil showed antiasthmatic potential in vivo.•11 species were evaluated in clinical trials for the treatment of asthma.
