•The anisotropy field distribution was determined for powder cores.•The normalizing field is the anisotropy field corresponding to the maximum of the distribution•The field dependencies in normalized representation collapse in common curves.•The curvature parameter was determined using a new fitting for magnetization curve.•The average product of HK and µ determines Beff, which is a figure of merit for the powder core.
