Risk of plastics losses to the environment from Indian landfills

•A framework for quantifying urban risks of plastic losses from landfills is developed.•It covers relevant pathways, like wind blowing, precipitation/runoff, or flooding.•Risk assessment is performed on 496 large cities across entire India.•Approx. 11% of cities present severe or very high risks of plastic losses.•Results can support national and urban policy-makers to curb plastics pollution.
