•Simple pyrite addition enhanced performance of BDD anode system in SMZ degradation.•Utilization of by-product oxygen generated at BDD anode to produce H2O2 was achieved.•Formation of OH and O2− in BDD-NiF-pyrite system contributed to SMZ degradation.•In vivo pharmaceutical activity removal was assessed by zebrafish inflammation model.
