Asymmetric NDI electron transporting SAM materials for application in photovoltaic devices

New electron transporting materials containing 1,4,5,8,-naphtalenetetracarboxylic diimide central fragment along with various anchoring groups were synthesized and investigated for possible application in photovoltaic devices. These semiconductors demonstrated good thermal stability and suitable electrochemical properties for effective electron transport from absorber layer to cathode. Self-assembled monolayers of reported derivatives have shown increased contact angle, which indicates bond formation between monolayer forming molecules and Sb2S3, Sb2Se3 or perovskite surface. Favorable energetic band alignment and possibility to modify absorber layer surface makes them promising candidates for application in perovskite or antimony chalcogenide solar cells.
