•We examine the long-term effects of exposure to genocide during childhood.•We distinguish between directly-exposed and indirectly-exposed individuals.•Directly-exposed individuals become more antisocial as death rates increase.•Directly-exposed individuals become more risk taking as death rates increase.•Results suggest the direct exposure channel drives the long-term effects.
