•MWCNTs/Fe3O4 with definite defect location can be prepared by virtue of direct fluorination.•The effect of the inner tube defects on microwave absorption was explored and emphasized.•The optimal absorption frequency band can be adjusted from high frequency band to low frequency band by controlling fluorination degree.
