•The ratio of peroxiredoxin-1 and thioredoxin-1 positive circulating lymphocytes and monocytes is elevated in preeclampsia.•The ratio of peroxiredoxin-1 and thioredoxin-1 positive circulating lymphocytes and monocytes correlates inversely with the birth weight.•The upregulation of peroxiredoxin-thioredoxin system helps to antagonize the effects of oxidative stress in preeclampsia.
