Integrated Optimization of Backup Rolling Stock Configuration and Disturbance Management.

The frequent disturbance in metro systems makes some train services unable to operate as scheduled, resulting in the decline of service quality. Taking the uncertainty of disturbance into consideration, this paper focuses on the integrated optimization of backup rolling stock configuration and disturbance management. To address this problem, a new two-stage stochastic optimization model that applies four dispatching strategies (i.e., retiming, service cancellation, shortturning and backup rolling stock usage) is introduced. The purpose of the first stage is to generate a configuration scheme for backup rolling stocks, while the second stage aims to determine a timetable and rolling stock assignment for each scenario that represents one of the possible disturbances with a given probability. The objective of this model is to achieve a trade-off between the investment cost of backup rolling stocks and the expected negative disturbance effects in different random scenarios. Numerical experiments based on the data of Beijing Yizhuang line demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model and solution approach.
