•Composite tubes reinforced by CFRP, GFRP, and their inter-layer hybrids were prepared.•Three trigger mechanisms were designed and compared.•Axial crushing response of composite tubes was investigated experimentally and numerically.•Effects of trigger mechanism and fiber hybridization on energy absorption mechanisms were revealed.
