Here’s the story: Narrative ability and executive function in autism spectrum disorder

•Narrative ability and executive function were measured in school-aged children.•Autistic children produced shorter and less complex stories than neurotypical children.•Inhibitory challenges related to dysfluent narrative among autistic children.•Working memory did not relate to any of the measures of narrative ability.•More work is needed to examine relations between executive function and narrative.
