Is Psathyromyia shannoni (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) a species complex? Retrospective study of genetic diversity of COI gene, pathogens and geographic distribution

•Retrospective study on the genetic diversity of Pa. shannoni based on the Cytochrome Oxidase subunit 1 gene.•According to genetic variability and the distribution of Pa. shannoni, this species should be divided at least into three genetic lineages.•The distribution of Pa. bigeniculata could start in the south of Colombia, Brazil and French Guyana.
