•Steam promotes tar cracking more than CO2.•CO2 facilitates the cracking of aromatic compounds containing oxygen groups.•Temperature above 800℃ contributes to benzene cracking and reduces H consumption.•Cyclopentadienyl combination can effectively promote naphthalene formation.•H and OH radicals are critical in phenol and benzofuran cracking, respectively.
