•Based on historical reports, shedding of vaccine-derived genetic materials was only detected with replication-competent vaccines.•None of the WHO-approved COVID-19 vaccines pose a risk of a false positive signal for wastewater-based surveillance (WBS).•The relationship between wastewater and clinical data changes throughout the pandemic.•Comparison of WBS signals across longer timescales is complicated by vaccination and prevailing variant of concern.
