Reducing the environmental impact of offshore H2S scavenging wastewater via hydrothermal oxidation

•Hydrothermal oxidation (HTO) markedly reduces ecotoxicity of spent H2S scavengers.•HTO executed at 199, 279 and 350 °C, with reaction times from 5 to 360 min.•Ecotoxicity towards bacteria after HTO reduced more than 90% at all conditions.•Ecotoxicity towards algae after HTO reduced from 48% to 82%.•HTO reactor optimization requires both chemical and ecotoxicity analysis.
