•Perinatal depression is a common complication of pregnancy.•It is widely overlooked partly due to lack of biomarkers.•BDNF has psychostablizing effects with deficiency increasing the risk of depression.•Changes in serum BDNF emerge as a surrogate endpoint for perinatal depression.
