•Correlations between the SAMP test, DASH and NDI indicate excellent convergent validity.•Differences in the SAMP between patients and controls indicate excellent discriminant validity.•Differences in the SAMP between the 4-subgroups of patients indicate excellent known groups validity.•Performing ≥30 SAMP repetitions predicts an absence of ULD 99% of the time.•Performing <30 SAMP repetitions predicts the presence of ULD 90% of the time.
