•Persistence of human norovirus surrogates (MNV and TV) varied across environmental waters.•MNV and TV remained intact and were detected at 100 days in environmental waters.•TV was infectious after 100 days of storage in pond and reclaimed waters.•MNV and TV are useful surrogates for studying survival in surface water.•Enteric virus survival is worthy of consideration in surface waters used for irrigation.
