Characterization of a bioderived imaging sensor based on a Morpho butterfly’s wing

•Demonstration of image acquisition using the wing of a butterfly interrogated by digital holography.•Phase change response is linear to the incoming radiation intensity.•Spatio-temporal response is characterized, with the 55ms time constant, and the spatial resolution of 1,46lp/mm.
