•The production of TCR is unequally distributed across regions.•Net importers of embodied TCR are mainly focused on the east and west coastal areas.•The non-metallic and metallic products sectors are the most important sectors.•The largest portion of embodied TCR were triggered by households’ final demand.•High-income groups account for high percent of total TCR footprint.
