•An ANN model based on the prediction of the internal flow field of vortex tubes was proposed.•Eight geometrical and operational parameters were selected as inputs for ANN.•The boundary conditions for the occurrence of secondary circulation and stagnation point was probed.•A vortex tube optimization method based on the synergy of flow field structure was put forward.
