Using individual-based modelling to investigate a pluralistic explanation for the prevalence of sexual reproduction in animal species

•We investigate the possible interaction of three single factors explaining sex.•The factors are increased predation, deleterious allele, and fluctuating resources.•Scarce resources and increased predation augment the effect of deleterious alleles.•Increased predation was unaffected by multiple factors.•Multiple factors reversed the effect on sex of fluctuating resources.
