Comparative Study of Flux-Switching Machines with T-Array and U-Array Permanent-Magnet Arrangements

This paper presents the comparison of two flux-switching (FS) machines with U-array and T-array permanent-magnet (PM) arrangements, termed as U-FSPM and T-FSPM, respectively. The topology evolution of U-FSPM and T-FSPM are illustrated based on an existing consequent-pole FSPM. By using the air-gap field modulation theory, the analytical model of the U-FSPM and T-FSPM are built and comparatively investigated. The harmonic analysis of the U-FSPM and T-FSPM are carried out, based on which the differences of working harmonics distributions of these two FSPMs are compared. The electromagnetic performances of the U-FSPM and T-FSPM are compared by finite-element analysis (FEA). It is found that the T-FSPM exhibits higher torque density and better overloading capability than U-FSPM. Finally, a prototype of T-FSPM is manufactured for experimental verification.
