•Ultrasonic-assisted polyphenol extraction from P. haitanensis was optimized.•UPLC-ESI-QTOF0MS fingerprinted polyphenols from P. haitanensis.•Antioxidant activities of polyphenols from P. haitanensis were characterized.•Polyphenols inhibited HepG2 cell growth and cell viability.•Apoptosis and migration inhibition of HepG2 cells were induced by the polyphenols.
