•The structure design is obtained for PCHEs of liquid metal and aviation kerosene.•Models are validated with the laboratory operating data.•The optimal channel is provided for trapezoidal cross-section and 0° inclination.•Each liquid metal channel corresponds to two aviation kerosene channels.•The thermal–hydraulic performance of the optimal microchannel are investigated.
