A climate-sensitive mixed-effects tree recruitment model for oaks (Quercus spp.) in Hunan Province, south-central China

•A tree recruitment model was developed for oaks (Quercus spp.) in Hunan Province, south-central China.•Mean annual temperature significantly affected the occurrence probability and counts of oaks recruitment.•The performance of the models improved significantly when the random effects were added.
